Alvin Lory Grout and Robert Goddard

Sometime in the 1970s in a conversation with my Mother (Louise Line Grout) she said that my Dad (Milton Lory Grout) lived as a boy a few miles away from Robert Goddard’s farm (actually his aunt’s farm) where he invented rockets.

Following is a letter to my Dad from my Grandfather regarding his relationship with Robert Goddard and his family.

I have since learned that Robert Goddard received an MA in 1910 and a Phd in 1911 from Clark University.  He became a professor of physics at Clark University in 1914 and later served as the director of the physics department.  He left Clark University in 1943 after 29 years on the faculty.  My Dad graduated from Clark University June 10 1935 while Robert Goddard was a professor there.  Looking over his records I don’t believe he took a class from Robert Goddard but clearly must have known him.
